Books
(Like, the real kind. With pages that you turn)
I love books.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am ALL for upgrading books with technology, such as the Kindle or the Nook. Especially if that's what it takes to get people, or kids, reading, and our literacy rate to grow. I even have the Kindle app on my phone (however, which I have yet to use).
But there is something about sitting in a library, a Barnes and Noble, a university, or an archive which will never, ever compare to any kind of technology. I like the smell of books. The design of bindings. Hardcovers, especially. I love rearranging my books so they are in a certain order, or a certain color. I love haphazard stacks of books next to my desk (when I once had enough room for a desk!).
Generally, I love to read a book. I can remember when I was little rarely ever begging to stay up late to watch television, but to stay awake to finish my book. Laying in bed and sneaking a flashlight under the covers to finish - yet again - whatever Babysitter's Club book that I had read for the thousandth time.
One of my favorite places to be surrounded by books, an incredible library: Yale University Library: Manuscripts and Archives. You wouldn't believe what's there.I thank my lucky stars everyday that the majority of my work is in the books.
