elephants

My grandmother owns many small statues of elephants, and I had always thought that she just really, really loved them or maybe it was her favorite animal. I had never really thought to ask why, I just assumed. I remember always playing with them as a kid, imaging a safari with lions and tigers around the fireplace. A few years ago during a visit, my boyfriend (now to-be husband) asked about them and why she liked elephants...and she laughed. Her reply was "I'm not really sure. I had one, and then people just starting giving me gifts of elephants and now I have many."
It taught me to think twice - about making assumptions, even about the people you think you know best. Now, I think of it as a different kind of elephant in the room.
